Bear Cub Scout Requirement: Fur, Feathers, and Ferns

Cubscout Uniform

Looking to help your Cub Scout complete their Bear requirements? When visiting the refuge they can complete their Fur, Feathers, and Ferns requirements for the Bear rank. The refuge facilitates this through the Agents of Discovery app that can be downloaded for free from app stores. This game also works on tablets.

Before arriving at the refuge download the Agents of Discovery app and load the Patuxent Research Refuge Visitor Center mission. It is also advisable to download the North Tract mission in case scouts wish to play an additional game.

When you arrive at the visitor center area begin at the front of the visitor center. You should be standing in front of the wolf statues. Load the game and follow the navigation arrows. During your hike you will be given several challenges to complete. This experience will guide you for about half a mile. You may compete the required 1 mile hike by exploring trails near the visitor center or by driving to North Tract to play the addition Agents of Discovery game. (Currently the visitor center is closed, but the grounds are open. Badges for playing Agents of Discovery are available at the North Tract visitor contact station.)

When playing the game the following requirements will be met.

  • While hiking or walking for one mile, identify six signs that any mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, or plants are living near the place where you choose to hike or walk.
  • Visit a wildlife refuge.
  • Name one animal that has become extinct in the last 100 years and one animal that is currently endangered. Explain what caused their declines.
  • Observe wildlife from a distance. Describe what you saw.
