Everyone interested in butterflies is invited to join the Butterfly Survey of Big Oaks on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 8 am. The refuge is especially interested in counting monarch butterflies, whose populations have recently plummeted. Volunteers will gather at the refuge office and will divide into groups based on the amount of time they have to spend on the refuge (half-day or entire day). Bring water, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks or lunch, binoculars, and a butterfly field guide if you have one. Wearing long pants is recommended. A $3.00 donation to the North American Butterfly Association would be appreciated for those participating in the count. For directions to the refuge call 812-273-0783.
