The refuge remains closed to ALL public entry due to road construction. The refuge is expected to reopen to the public by October 1st. If it is possible to reopen sooner, we will. We encourage visitors to call the refuge office for the most up-to-date information at 608-539-2311 x.2

Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1936 and is nestled along the eastern edge of the mighty Mississippi River. The scenic drive to the refuge along the Great River Scenic Byway entices travelers along the way.

      Our Species

      This 6,808 acre refuge lies within the Mississippi River. The rolling prairies, rich wetlands and bottomland forests support a variety of wildlife species. These backwaters of the river provide resting and feeding areas for both waterfowl and other birds.
