Jackson Miles Abbott (1920-1988)
Black and white watercolor painting of American eiders (now known as common eiders) by Jackson Miles Abbott of Alexandria, Va. The artist was also a talented writer and noted ornithologist. In 1998, the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir established the Jackson Miles Abbott Wetland Refuge to protect sensitive wetlands and to provide opportunities for wildlife watching.
