At Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia and North Carolina, staff can adjust the amount of water retained by the water control structure by adding or removing steel stop-logs. The structure was installed as part of an effort to "rewet" the swamp — restore its natural hydrology after loggers and others drained it starting in the 18th century.
