Hawaiian stilts, or ae‘o, move about at the protected wetlands of Hulē‘ia National Wildlife Refuge on Kauaʻi, Dec. 23, 2023.

The ae‘o, has some of the longest legs relative to body size in the bird world!

The federally endangered wading birds with distinctive pink legs feed in both freshwater and saltwater, using their beaks to find insects, tiny fish or crustaceans.

Adults grow up to 16 inches in length and they only wade in water less than 9 inches deep.
