To measure ice thickness, first a small circumference hole is drilled in the ice with an auger. The hole must go through the ice to the water below. Then snow and ice shavings are cleared away and a yardstick is used to measure from the bottom surface of the ice to the top. The yardstick is fitted with a hook or nail on its end to be able to feel where the bottom of the ice is.
