Newton Creek NRDA

The natural resource Trustees, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and New York State, are conducting a Natural Resource Damage Assessment at the Newton Creek Superfund site in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. Newtown Creek is a 3.8-mile waterway that discharges into the East River near Roosevelt Island. It has an industrial legacy that goes back 150 years. It is contaminated with hazardous substances such as petroleum, polychlorinated biphenyls, copper, and chlorinated solvents. Approximately 17-30 million gallons of petroleum product underlay the Greenpoint area along Newtown Creek.

The extended public comment period for the Newtown Creek Draft Assessment Plan closed on May 30, 2024.
