Poʻouli (Hawaiian black-faced honeycreeper)

Removed from the Endangered Species List in November 2023, poʻouli (Melamprosops phaeosoma) there is limited documented history on this medium-sized honeycreeper. Endemic to the island of Maui, poʻouli was distinct from other Hawaiian forest birds in that no other forest birds were similarly colored like poʻouli. Little is known about po'ouli culturally as there is no reference to it in any mo'olelo, oli, or mele. Even it's indigenous name is a mystery.
