Ariel Appleton in 1979 holding Gertie the Bolson tortoise. While Appleton wasn't a scientist, she was the first person to successfully breed Bolson tortoises in the U.S. Gertie the Bolson tortoise was the first Bolson tortoise to produce offspring in the US in thousands of years.
