Dr. Stewart Reid from Western Fishes (left) and Damon Goodman, biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in San Luis Obispo Creek look for Pacific lamprey with an Engineering Technical Service advanced backpack sampler (with a lamprey specific sampling technique). This low impact sampling approach has no effect on fish other than lamprey and has a high detection probability for the species. The sampling uses low voltage and slow pulsed electricity to draw young lamprey out of their sand burrows and net them while they are swimming in the water. This approach has been peer reviewed and published in the journal Transactions of the American Fisheries Society. Credit: John Heil/USFWS
