Thousands of nesting Bonin petrels were buried alive. Petrels nest in underground burrows. The petrel population at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge has grown exponentially since rats were eradicated over 10 years ago. Image taken from USFWS Pacific Region Flickr page.
