What We Do
The office provides oversight for a multistate, federal and private efforts to protect and restore American shad and other migratory fish to the Delaware and Susquehanna rivers.
Management and Conservation
We work to improve connectivity in the Susquehanna River basin and provide fish access to historic spawning areas. The office works closely with dam-owners on the mainstem Susquehanna River hydroelectric projects to minimize damage to the environment and to migratory fishes. We work with other fishery management agencies in the Delaware River Basin to protect and restore migratory fishes and improve access to their spawning habitats. We also work with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to assess the status and health of migratory fish species, and make recommendations for their protection, restoration and harvest.
The office focuses primarily on American shad, American eel, Atlantic sturgeon, and shortnose sturgeon, alewife, blueback herring, and horseshoe crab. All migratory and resident aquatic species, benefit, however, from the habitat and water resource management work conducted by the office.
Our Projects and Research
In our efforts to protect the Susquehanna River and Delaware River basins and their species, we facilitate fish passages which allow upstream passage to several species that inhabit these areas. Check out our fish passages to learn more!
