Working for Our Fire Program
Join the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service firefighting team, where adventure meets expertise! This isn't just a job—it's an adventure unlike any other!
Out of all the agencies within the Department of the Interior, we stand alone in our mission to conserve and protect fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. Imagine being part of a team dedicated to preserving nature's wonders and ensuring the health of our ecosystems. We use prescribed fire strategically to maintain the natural balance these landscapes need to thrive. In fact, we're responsible for applying half of all prescribed fire acres across the country among Department of the Interior agencies!
Our firefighters receive highly specialized training in a wide range of disciplines essential for managing wildland fires. From fire planning and operations to ecology, science, and emergency management, our crews are equipped with the knowledge to tackle any fire challenge. And, when fire season ignites, our crews spring into action, supporting wildfire suppression efforts nationwide. This means traveling to remote and breathtaking locations that few people ever get to experience.
Entry-level firefighters kick off their careers at Basic Fire School (Rookie School), where they receive foundational training. Returning firefighters continue to advance with specialized training, gaining expertise in prescribed burning, wildfire suppression, and fire preparedness.
If you're looking for a career that's physically and mentally challenging, offers opportunities to travel, and makes a meaningful impact, joining our wildland fire crew could be your calling. You'll protect landscapes and communities and gain invaluable experience in managing natural resources and fostering ecological health.
If being in the middle of the action isn’t quite your pace, consider a support role in dispatch, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), public affairs, or several others.
We embrace diversity, valuing varied life experiences, educational backgrounds, and personal perspectives. Join us and become part of a dynamic team dedicated to preserving our nation's natural heritage while forging a rewarding and impactful career in firefighting.
