Brant Goose
The brant is a true sea goose who is able to drink saltwater and eat saltwater plants. The eelgrass beds at the Refuge are an ideal source of food for the hungry brant.
Historically tens of thousands of brant spent the winter months in the Salish Sea. Today that number fluctuates between four to eight thousand. Preserving eelgrass habitat at Dungeness is an important element in the continued support of a healthy brant population.
In the spring and fall tens of thousands of brant migrate between breeding grounds in the Artic and wintering sites in Baja, Mexico. Dungeness Bay offers a welcome respite where they can pause to refuel along their journey. A few thousand brant chose not to migrate all the way to Mexico and instead spend the winter in the Salish Sea. A few hundred of that population over-winter at Dungeness.
