Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is home to the headquarters of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. At this location you can find several walking trails through which you'll get the chance to learn about our resident, migratory, and endemic bird species, plant species, and invasive species invasive species
An invasive species is any plant or animal that has spread or been introduced into a new area where they are, or could, cause harm to the environment, economy, or human, animal, or plant health. Their unwelcome presence can destroy ecosystems and cost millions of dollars.
Learn more about invasive species . Whether you choose to schedule a guided tour or explore at your own pace, we provide informational panels throughout the trails which will help you learn about our species and ecosystems. Some of these panels contain QR codes that when scanned play recordings of the different calls of each bird. Given that most of these birds are highly social creatures, just like Puerto Ricans, playing these recordings provides the opportunity to observe the birds up close and personal as they roam free in their home.
The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge Salt Flats Unit is home to the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex Interpretive Center. At this center we offer the opportunity to learn about local endangered species, ecosystems, and the history of the salt flats and salt mining industry in Puerto Rico. Across from the center you will find the main observation tower which overlooks the salt flats, mountains, and coast. Behind the center there are three different hiking trails where you can observe mangrove forests, subtropical dry forests, hypersaline lagoons, butterflies, birds, and more.
