Visit Us
The Crosby Wetland Management District Headquarters is located two miles south of Crosby, North Dakota, on the east side of Highway 42. We have a small office with a small learning display, and we enjoy visiting with people that stop by.
The office is in the southwest corner of the 156 acre Carlson Waterfowl Production Area, where visitors can find a diversity of wildlife through the seasons, particularly in the spring and fall months.
We encourage everyone to explore the unique prairie and wetland habitats found on our many Waterfowl Production Areas scattered throughout northwest North Dakota and on Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge.
Activities
Waterfowl Production Areas are open to hunting, trapping, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, and environmental education.
Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge is open to deer and upland game bird hunting (specific regulations apply), photography, and wildlife viewing.
Much of the Crosby Wetland Management District is comprised of wetland and grassland easements, which remain in private ownership. The landowner is responsible for controlling public access to these areas.
Other Facilities in the Complex
Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge is an unstaffed, "satellite" National Wildlife Refuge that is managed by the Crosby Wetland Management District staff. Visit the Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge website to learn more about what the refuge has to offer.
Rules and Policies
Public Use Regulations for North Dakota Waterfowl Production Areas
Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) are part of the National Wildlife Refuge System - a network of lands set aside specifically for wildlife. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Refuge System is a living heritage, conserving wildlife and habitat for people today and for generations to come.
North Dakota has over 289,000 acres of habitat conserved as WPAs. These lands are purchased with funds from the sale of Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps, commonly known as the “Duck Stamp.” The wetland and grassland habitats on WPAs are managed to provide important resting and breeding grounds for migratory birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. By providing permanent habitat, these WPAs help sustain North America’s waterfowl populations.
Wildlife-dependent recreational activities are allowed on WPAs. These activities include hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education, and interpretation. Please observe our rules and policies to protect natural resources and to help ensure your visit will be safe and enjoyable.
