Driving Directions
The office is located in the west central portion of Minnesota with lands located in Becker, Clay, Mahnomen, Norman and Polk Counties. It is 2 miles north of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, via Hwy 59 North, then 1 mile east on CR 131 at 1732 North Tower Road, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501. There is no charge to visit.

Restrooms are available inside the district office during normal working hours.
What To Do
If you have one hour
- The headquarters trail is a 1.5 mile hiking trail that includes grasslands and wildflowers with wildlife viewing opportunities
If you have half a day or more
- Helliksen Prairie Waterfowl Production Area, located in northwest Becker County, is a special remnant wet prairie where you can observe wildflowers and grassland birds including greater prairie chickens
- Zillmer/Felton Prairie is located on the Lake Agassiz Beach Ridge and offers stunning views of the Red River Valley below. It is a mix of wet and dry remnant and restored prairie.
Know Before You Go
When planning a trip to the waterfowl production areas, it is important to wear appropriate footwear for land excursions and to dress for the weather. Consider bringing water, food, binoculars, field guides, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and anything else that might make the outdoor experience more enjoyable.
