National wildlife refuges offer us all a chance to unplug from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with our natural surroundings. Visitors can enjoy the walking path and the overlook.
Driving Directions
From Muleshoe, Texas
Go south six miles on Highway 214, then follow FM 746 west approximately 22 miles to the New Mexico state line. Turn left onto the 1/2 mile long entrance road, which ends at a small parking area.
From Portales, New Mexico
Go approximately 25 miles southeast on Highway 88 to the Texas state line, then turn right onto the Refuge entrance road.
Fees
There is no charge to visit.
Restrooms
There are no facilities available on the refuge.

Walk the foot path to the overlook
If you have one hour:
Sit and enjoy the birds
Relax in the peace of nature
If you have half a day or more:

Know Before You Go
Water, sunscreen, and bug spray will make your visit more enjoyable. Closed-toed, walking shoes or boots are recommended.
Visitor Tips
Wildlife is most active in the morning and evening hours when temperatures are cooler.
Activities
Make the most of your visit and take some time for birding, wildlife watching and photography.
Rules and Policies
Please drive only on designated roads.
Firearms, bows, and other weapons are prohibited.
Grulla National Wildlife Refuge should be a quiet place to enjoy nature--please leave fireworks, loud radios, and other sound equipment at home.
Hiking is not allowed on the refuge.
No flying objects allowed on the refuge (i.e. drones)
Keep wild things wild--all plants and animals are protected and should not be disturbed or collected.
Hunting, horseback riding, fishing, ATVs, boating, and swimming are not allowed on the refuge.
Please leave only your footprints; take all litter with you.
Please keep all pets on a leash; or better yet, leave your pets at home.
