The refuge is open to surf-fishing year-round, daily, 24 hours. Anglers may be restricted from certain areas within the refuge due to the presence of protected migratory birds and seals. In the summer, bluefish are a great attraction to tourists. Striped bass usually migrate by the refuge beginning in August. Albacore and Spanish mackerel are the most commonly caught fish off the Coskata-Coatue peninsula. Seals are present and can be dangerous. Seals in this area will chase fish caught on a line and are also attracted to fish that are being filleted.
