The Northeast Montana Wetland Management District (WMD) consists of 44 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) in Sheridan, Daniels, and Roosevelt Counties. Hunting is allowed on all WPAs. The most common game species hunted are ducks, geese, ring-necked pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, and white-tailed deer, although an extended drought has reduced waterfowl production in recent years. The WPAs total 11,791 acres. The purpose of Northeast Montana WMD is to provide breeding habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Bounded on the north by the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, on the south by the Missouri River, and on the east by North Dakota, the WMD is in far northeastern Montana.
