36th Annual Catch A Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby at Wolf Creek NFH

Written By

The 36th Annual Catch A Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery was a huge success! With 1,000 children registered, staff and volunteers at Wolf Creek were able to introduce countless families to the wonderful world of angling! Hosting this event on Free Fishing Day and providing the resources needed to properly enjoy a day of fishing allows

those lacking the opportunity to experience fishing for the very first time.

Each age group from 5-15 years old  was allotted an hour to fish, with the biggest catch receiving a trophy to commemorate their keeper. After a drawing to give away the bigger prizes (tricycles and bicycles), each child was given a prize to encourage further exploring the outdoors. Some of the prizes included bug-catching kits, binoculars, animal calls, tents, sleeping bags, fishing poles, tackle boxes, etc. To accommodate the smaller anglers in attendance, 4 large pools were set up under a pavilion to provide fishing for the 1-4 year old's. Using cane poles, those at the kiddie pool were able to try their luck for their first ever rainbow trout and were given a prize following fishing.

In addition to the prizes, hot dogs, drinks, snow cones, and sunscreen were provided to all attendees at no cost thanks to 60 generous sponsors and the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. This event was also made possible by the 104 exceptional volunteers who served at various capacities including helping with fishing at the creek, face painting, serving food, kids archery, event set up and tear down, etc.

The Catch A Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby has been providing a wonderful free family-fun day for 36 years now and plans have already begun for year 37!
