Edenton National Fish Hatchery Staff and Chowan-Edenton Optimist Club Help Out Next Generation of Anglers
“I LOVE FISHING”! – Kellan (Age 3) at Edenton National Fish Hatchery

In celebration of National Fish and Boating Week, Edenton National Fish Hatchery hosted its annual youth fishing derby. With the help of hatchery staff, an estimated 70 kids and their support teams caught hundreds of catfish.  The derby is co-sponsored by the Chowan-Edenton Optimist club. Each year club members volunteer at the derby and provide lunch for hungry anglers. The derby has been an Edenton tradition for at least 20 years. Some of the best stories are the repeat customers…One angler, Quinn, dropped his pacifier in with the catfish at his first Derby. He is now ten and a seasoned veteran of Edenton NFH’s fishing derbies. FWS Fish Funds made it possible for the hatchery to replace worn out fishing gear. Having fishing gear available for use at the derby opens this opportunity to more kids in the community. Thank you Fish Funds!
