Beginning Birder Workshop with Larry Meade

This program is part of Northern Virginia Audubon Society Stretch Our Parks initiative, in partnership with the staff of Occoquan Bay NWR.

October is a great time for birding! Birds of all kinds are migrating south to reach their wintering grounds. In this experiential workshop at Occoquan Bay NWR, the pace will be leisurely as we learn how to spot and identify birds. We also will discuss the natural history of the birds that we see. As we explore the park, we can practice using our optics and apps such as eBird and Merlin. The emphasis of this workshop will be more on learning about birding than on compiling a big list for the morning, although we will see plenty of birds. As an added bonus, we will also take note of the butterflies and dragonflies that we find along the way.

Larry Meade is president of the Northern Virginia Bird Club and a member of the ASNV Adult Education Committee. He is a frequent bird walk leader and has been involved in numerous Audubon Christmas Bird Counts and North Atlantic Butterfly Association (NABA) counts. He is the compiler of the Alexandria Circle butterfly count for NABA.
