Join us for a book talk and reading by the author of the Potomac Shores series, Carolyn McBride, in the Visitor Information Center at Occoquan Bay NWR.
McBride, a former travel writer and editor for the National Geographic Society with a deep love for our region, invites readers to dive into the beauty and serenity of the Potomac River with her debut novel, The Cicada Spring, and its holiday sequel, Santa Overboard. Occoquan Bay NWR is featured in both books, along with nearby parks and refuges bordering Belmont Bay and Occoquan Bay. She will discuss the literary and regional influences for her eco-fiction and share photos of the real Bonnie Brae described in the story.
McBride's series takes readers on a poignant journey of second chances and resilience through the eyes of a female boat captain as she navigates a crossroads in midlife, finding solace and strength on the shores of the Potomac. Born and raised in Northern Virginia, McBride explored the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers as a child growing up on the shores of Belmont Bay. She and her husband currently reside in the Belmont Bay community.
Earnie Porta, mayor of the Town of Occoquan, describes The Cicada Spring as "a well-written and absorbing story of resilience that also wonderfully explores and captures the natural beauty of the Occoquan River and its surroundings." Booklife Reviews praises her evocative writing: “McBride imbues The Cicada Spring with a profound love of nature and infectious curiosity about the Occoquan River and Virginia’s history, going back to its ancient inhabitants.”
Signed copies will also be available for purchase at the event.
