Tree Identification Walk with Jim McGlone

This program is part of Northern Virginia Audubon Society Stretch Our Parks initiative, in partnership with the staff of Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Join us for a walk through Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge to learn how to identify common native trees and how you can be a good park neighbor by planting your own native trees at home. You’ll also learn why trees are so important, both in parks and the areas surrounding parks.

Jim McGlone has a Ph.D. in Human Ecology (also known as Economics) from Virginia Tech and a Master’s Certificate in Environmental Law and Policy from the US Department of Agriculture Graduate School. A self-taught naturalist and ecologist, he has managed the natural resources of a 500-acre park in Fairfax County and is a retired Urban Forest Conservationist with the Virginia Department of Forestry in Northern Virginia. He continues to teach environmental stewardship through Tree Stewards, Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, and other groups. He and his wife have been practicing conservation landscaping since 2005 and removed turf grass from their property in 2008. He is a Certified Arborist and has a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification, both through the International Society of Arboriculture.
