An ʻakikiki (Kauaʻi creeper) sits on a branch. ʻAkikiki is one of several forest birds native to Hawaiʻi and at a high risk of extinction due to avian malaria, a disease transmitted by invasive mosquitoes. For some species a single bite by an infected mosquito can kill.
