The San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge in California was established in 1987 to protect the core wintering grounds for the then-endangered Aleutian cackling goose. The species has since recovered. Thousands of Aleutian cackling geese can be seen from the Beckwith Road observation area in winter.
