The aurora borealis—or Northern Lights—near Koyukuk National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. The phenomenon is caused by collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter Earth’s atmosphere. Northern Lights are visible across the heart of Alaska in winter.
