The natural resource Trustees, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and New York State, are conducting a Natural Resource Damage Assessment at the Gowanus Canal Superfund site in Brooklyn, New York. The Gowanus Canal is a 1.8-mile-long waterway that extends from Butler Street in Brooklyn to Gowanus Bay, and ultimately, Upper New York Bay. The Gowanus Canal has an industrial legacy that goes back 180 years. It is contaminated with hazardous substances such as petroleum, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, metals, and chlorinated solvents.
The extended public comment period for the Gowanus Canal Draft Assessment Plan closed on June 14, 2024.
