Freshwater mussels are important to clean water supplies as they filter unhealthy particles from waterways. Mussels live a mostly sedentary life, so to get them where they’re going throughout streams and rivers, some mussels need a host fish. When baby mussels attach to these fish, the fish deliver the babies upstream. USFWS photo by Brittany Barker-Jones
