The threatened noonday globe snail only occurs on the north-facing side of the Nantahala River Gorge, in western North Carolina.

Spurred by concern over potential wildlife impacts, Service biologist Jason Mays has lead efforts to expand our understanding of this rare snail. His efforts have included exploring the gorge to gain a better understanding of the snail's range and it's relationship with nearby, closely-related snails.
