Shell Keys National Wildlife Refuge is a 8-acre refuge lies in the offshore waters of the Louisiana Gulf Coast, west of the Atchafalaya River Delta and south of Marsh Island Refuge, and was established in 1907, as a reserve and breeding ground for native birds. One of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System, Shell Keys consists of a small, dynamic group of shell-based islets above mean high tide that are subject to erosion and change from storms.
