It's Out Here!

Come along with the Reno Fish and Wildlife Office as we visit the rare and unique species that reside in California and Nevada's Great Basin! From 14,000-foot-tall peaks to remote parts of the sagebrush sagebrush
The western United States’ sagebrush country encompasses over 175 million acres of public and private lands. The sagebrush landscape provides many benefits to our rural economies and communities, and it serves as crucial habitat for a diversity of wildlife, including the iconic greater sage-grouse and over 350 other species.

Fish Slough milkvetch

Come along with us as we visit Fish Slough milkvetch, a beautiful plant that is part of the pea family. This species is endemic to Fish Slough and is found just outside of Bishop, Calif. We join Sophie Heston to learn about the plant, the unique environment it grows in, and get a glimpse into the life of a botanist!

Carson wandering skipper

Come along with us as we visit Carson wandering skipper, a rare butterfly with populations right outside of Reno and Carson City! We join our biologist Lara Enders as she surveys for this bright orange butterfly. We learn about how to spot the butterfly, what impacts are affecting its populations, and hear about why working to conserve this species is important to Lara.

Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep

Join us next month on December 3 to learn about Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, a tough and hardy animal that lives in the Sierra Nevada range. We join the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to learn about the species, what it takes to find and survey for them, and hear about recovering an animal that lives in the alpine.
