Koniag one of 12 for-profit Alaska Native Regional Corporations established in 1971 by Congress to settle aboriginal land claims in Alaska. Owned by more than 4,100 Alutiiq shareholders, Koniag’s social mission originated from its Alutiiq ancestors who have called the region home for thousands of years. Alutiiq Sugpiaq people are the original stewards of the lands and waters that now make up Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge and continue to live in relationship with the place that has been a homeland for more than 7,500 years.
