Proposed Whitefront Wildlife Management Area

LAKEWOOD, Colo-The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking public comment on a draft environmental assessment (Draft EA) regarding Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) proposed “Whitefront Wildlife Management Area Property Exchange.”  Public comments will be accepted for a total of 15-days.



The NGPC is proposing to exchange 40-acres of disturbed habitat on the Whitefront Wildlife Management Area (WMA) for 40-acres of high value habitat located on the adjacent Shultz tract in Clay County, Nebraska. The property was originally purchased with Wildlife Restoration Grant funds to provide valuable wetland habitat to migratory waterfowl and provide a recreation source for public hunting, trapping and nature study.  The NGPC has determined that the proposed action will not affect the purpose of the Whitefront WMA.

A State Wildlife Agency is required to request Service approval prior to the disposition of real property that was purchased with Wildlife Restoration grant funds.  The Services’ decision to approve or disapprove the proposed disposition constitutes a federal action subject to the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), as amended, and requires the Service to prepare a Draft Environmental Assessment to analyze the effects of the proposed action.  We have prepared this Draft EA and are providing it for public review and comment pursuant to NEPA requirements.
