When emergencies arise like wildfires, it’s important to know that you can count on your neighbors. We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have the qualified firefighters and necessary equipment to work with local communities and our counterparts in state, federal and tribal governments, when it is safe to do so.
Case in point from Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, near Necedah, Wisconsin. On the afternoon of April 12, 2023, eight refuge firefighters responded to a wildfire on private land, just outside of the city of Necedah. The refuge firefighting team brought two engines, two tracked vehicles and two overhead trucks to fight the wildfire. After working into the night, the team contained the fire. Thanks to clear communication and quick action, the refuge team was able to lessen damage and keep neighbors safe.
