Lewiston, Mont. - The Duval Bridge on the west end of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge will be closed until further notice due to safety concerns. An alternative route to access the Elk Viewing Area and refuge is available using the north Auto Tour entrance between mile markers 98 and 99 on US 191. Please visit the refuge website to view a map of the alternate route.
During a routine inspection, staff determined the bridge had become unsafe for use. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considers public safety a top priority and is hiring a contractor to complete the necessary bridge repair. Visitors planning to view elk or hunt on the refuge will need to use the alternative route until further notice. Updates will be posted to the refuge Facebook page and refuge website as soon as new information is available.
