Bicycling is allowed only on designated public access routes/roads. Bikes are not allowed on the Sandy Ridge or Creef Cut walking trails.
Please be aware of your surroundings when biking on the refuge. Stay at least 100 yards away from large animals such as black bears, coyotes, and red wolves. You may need to turn around or move in order to give an animal space. Do not chase animals or cut them off.
Electric Bicycles (e-bikes)
In general, electric bicycles (e-bikes) are permitted wherever bicycles are allowed. This includes both roads open to motorized vehicles and roads closed to motorized vehicles but open to foot and bicycle traffic. Please consult the refuge website, refuge office, and signs on the ground to ensure that bicycles are permitted in the area you intend to bike.
Certain electric vehicles do not meet the standards of e-bikes set forth in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service policy (50 CFR 27.31[m]). According to policy:
“An e-bike is a two- or three-wheeled electric bicycle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of not more than 750 watts (1 h.p.) that meets the requirements of one of the following three classes:
(1) Class 1 e-bike shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.
(2) Class 2 e-bike shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle, and that is not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.
(3) Class 3 e-bike shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour.”
Using an electric bicycle without pedaling at speeds greater than 20mph or using an electric bicycle with pedal assist at speeds greater than 28 miles per hour is not permitted on the refuge.
