The refuge has two hiking trails which are open only to foot traffic or non-motorized travel i.e. closed to hunting. The most popular and easiest hike is the Big Cypress Trail which goes to a giant bald cypress tree. The refuge has three ATV trails which are open to all users and are frequented by hunters and anglers.
Trail Etiquette
To ensure that all visitors have an opportunity to enjoy the hiking trails, and for your safety and enjoyment please follow these guidelines:
- Stay on marked trails to help prevent erosion and damage to plants
- Leave all plants for others to enjoy
- Keep all pets on a leash
- Motorized vehicles of any kind are not allowed on the two designated hiking trails
- Do not litter. Pack it in, pack it out
- To see more wildlife, be as quiet as possible
- Insect repellent is advised from spring through fall
- Be aware of snakes during warm weather - don't put your hands or feet where you can't see.
