Established as a sanctuary for wintering waterfowl and other waterbirds, Coldwater River National Wildlife Refuge attracts large concentrations of wintering waterfowl. In 2015, the refuge partnered with Ducks Unlimited to create a 328-acre waterfowl hunt unit that borders the north end of the closed sanctuary. This hunt unit provides walk-in hunting of flooded moist soil and millet plantings. Waterfowl hunting runs until noon, three days a week during the state's waterfowl season.
