Iroquois NWR has several miles of trails throughout the refuge that are appropriate for all ages and abilities. The majority of refuge visitors come during the spring, early summer and fall months to take advantage of favorable trail conditions and opportunities for viewing annual spring and fall bird migrations, as well as enjoy the brilliance of New York’s fall foliage. Refuge trails are open from sunrise to sunset.

Refuge trails and roads can be used during the winter months when snow conditions are conducive to cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

Hiking and walking in the uplands (off designated nature trails) is allowed from October 1 to the end of February (hunting season). The Swallow Hollow, Kanyoo, Onondaga, and the Headquarters trails are designated no-hunting zone to protect visitors.

Interpretive signs on the Kanyoo and Swallow Hollow Nature Trails tell you about the wildlife and features along those paths. Also on Swallow Hollow and Feeder Road Trails, use your cell phone to learn about the history, ecology and wildlife via audio guides, developed by our partners.
