Located along the St. Johns River, Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge offers a quality public hunt for hunters who wish to get away from the crowds. Some hunt areas are accessible only by boat, and others are best reached on foot. The refuge also offers easy motor vehicle access to certain areas. The beautiful inland refuge offers a great way to experience wild Florida, with a mix of swamp bottomlands, freshwater marsh, and oak and pine forests. The refuge holds archery and muzzleloader deer hunts, issued by lottery, each year. Deer are common in the area but often move on and off the refuge throughout the year. This can make finding them difficult, but hunters who take time to learn the refuge and its different habitats can have a successful hunt. A turkey hunt is offered in the spring also by lottery draw for limited permits. Because most of the refuge is covered by water, reaching the best hunting locations can be difficult. Areas adjacent to swampy areas often have the most deer, and turkeys can be found in pine or scrubby flatwoods. Feral hogs may be taken during all hunts.
