To prevent disturbance to extremely sensitive seabirds and marine mammals, Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge is closed to all public access and the surrounding waters within 200 yards are closed to all watercraft.
Visit Us
Although Protection Island is closed to visitation to protect critical habitat, the Refuge’s wildlife may be viewed in the surrounding waters, and on the Island with the aid of binoculars and telescopes. However, boaters and paddlers must observe the 200 yard off-shore closure and should reduce speed to avoid harassing wildlife and to ensure birds are not flushed from their nests and marine mammals are not driven from shorelines. Please minimize human disturbance around this very important and sensitive Wildlife Refuge.
