Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, with its vast expanses of emergent vegetation mixed with open water, illustrates the unequaled diversity of a prairie marsh ecosystem. The slow-moving James River is the key in providing this habitat to the diverse wildlife species present on the refuge.  Each spring and fall, thousands of ducks, geese, and other migratory birds stop at Sand Lake.
