Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is located entirely within Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven. Approximately 1,600 acres of the 2,550-acre refuge provide habitat for white-tailed deer and are open to hunting November through January. All hunters are required to complete an online refuge hunting application for archery and/or shotgun with an application fee for each application. Applications are available early August through early September and are due annually by mid-September. Archery permits are issued for alternating one-week sessions, starting in November. Shotgun season is January only, and runs concurrently with archery. Note that the refuge will be open during the archery hunt sessions and closed during shotgun sessions. See the application materials for more information.
Wertheim refuge also hosts an annual spring youth turkey hunt the third weekend of April. The spring turkey hunt is open to youth hunters aged 12 to 15 years and per state regulations, youth hunters must be accompanied by a licensed and permitted adult hunter. All youth hunters and their accompanying non-hunting adult must attend an orientation prior to the hunt.
