Overview

Nothocestrum peltatum, a member of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, is a small tree up to 8 m (26 ft) tall with ash brown bark and woolly stems. The leathery leaves are usually peltate (attached to the stalk by the lower surface, inside the leaf margin rather than at its edge), 6 to 23 cm (2.4 to 9.1 in) long and 3.5 to 7.5 cm (1.4 to 3 in) wide and vary in shape from oval or elliptic to oblong. The densely hairy flowers number up to 10 per cluster. The corolla is greenish yellow fading to yellow orange and are 12 to 14 mm (0.5 to 0.6 in) long. The orange berries are 13 to 14 mm (0.5 to 0.6 in) long and contain numerous irregularly shaped seeds about 2.5 mm (0.1 in) in diameter.
