Overview
Sicyos lanceoloideus (anunu) is a perennial vine in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) that occurs on the islands of Oahu and Kauai. Vines may be up to 15 m (49 ft) long with the base more or less woody for several meters and up to 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter. New growth on stems is glabrous. Leaves are broadly ovate with a narrow basal indentation, 4 to 15 cm (0.1 to 0.5 in) long, 7 to 16 cm (0.2 to 0.5 in) wide, shallowly and palmately 3- to 5-lobed. Tendrils are 2- to 3-branched. Staminate (male) flowers are in glabrous panicles (flowers on secondary branches) 8 to 20 cm (0.3 to 0.7 in) long, peduncles 5 to 8 cm (0.2 to 0.3 in) long and pedicels 5 to 10 millimeters (mm) (0.02 to 0.03 in) long. White flowers are 5-lobed, with 6 to 10 per head, peduncles (stalks) 1.3 to 3 cm (0.04 to 0.1 in) long. Fruit are green, fusiform, 13 to 25 mm (0.04 to 0.08 in) long including the beak and 6 to 8 mm (0.02 to 0.03 in) in diameter.
