Overview

Cyanea superba, a member of the Campanulaceae (bellflower) family, is a single stemmed tree typically reaching 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft). The 0.5 to 1 m (1.6 to 3.3 ft) leaves are held in a rosette at the stem apex. Flowers occur on racemes that hang up to 35 cm (14 in) below the canopy of leaves. The corolla is curved, white to cream in color, and 5.5 to 8.8 cm (2.2 to 3.5 in) long. The fruit are oval berries 25 mm (1 in) long and 21 mm (0.8 in) wide with a green-white exocarp (outer layer) and orange-red mesocarp (central layer) containing approximately 130 seeds. Each seed averages 1.9 mm (0.07 in) long.
