Cyanea munroi

Munro's Cyanea

FWS Focus

Overview

Cyanea munroi, a member of the Campanulaceae (bellflower) family, is a short-lived perennial shrub 1 to 3.2 m (3.3 to 10.5 ft) tall. The stems are unbranched or sparingly branched and muricate (studded with short rough points). The leaves are pinnately (with two rows of leaflets along the axis) divided, the blades are 27 to 58 cm (11 to 23 in) long, 14 to 32 cm (6 to 13 in) wide. The upper surface of the leaves are glabrous (without hairs), rarely are they sparsely pubescent (bearing hairs) or muricate. The lower surface of the leaves are glabrous or muricate along the midrib, rarely are they densely pubescent. The leaves have 9 to 12 segments per side. The leaves are oblong (shaped basically like a rectangle), lanceolate (lance-shaped; much longer than wide, widest below the middle), narrowly triangular, or narrowly ovate (egg-shaped). The petioles (a leaf stalk that attaches the blade to the stem) are 8 to 32 cm (3 to 13 in) long. The inflorescences are 6- to 12-flowered, with peduncles (the stalk of an inflorescence or of a solitary flower) that are 15 to 75 mm (0.6 to 3 in) long. The hypanthium (a ring-like or cup-like structure formed by the fusion of the lower parts of the calyx, corolla, and androecium [all of the stamens of a flower, considered collectively]) is obconic (inversely cone-shaped, with the point of attachment at the small end) and the base is attenuate (tapering very gradually to a long, slender tip). The corolla (all of the petals of a flower, collectively) is 4 to 7.5 times longer than the hypanthium. The corolla is purplish or greenish to yellowish white, often suffused (gradually spread through or over) or striped with magenta. The dorsal (pertaining to the back or outer side) lobes are 15 to 32 mm (0.6 to 1.3 in) long, which is one-third as long as the tube to about as long. The dorsal anthers (the pollen-bearing part of a stamen) are 9.5 to 14 mm (0.4 to 0.5 in) long and the ventral (pertaining to the front or inner side) ones are 7.5 to 10 mm (0.3 to 0.4 in) long. The calyx (a collective term for all of the sepals of a flower) lobes are known to spread at the base before curving upwards. The corolla tube is broadest at or near the middle, and tapers toward both the apex and base. The base of the anther tube is pubescent. Fruit are orange berries that are obovoid (inversely egg-shaped) to ellipsoid (elliptic [form of a compressed circle more than twice as long as broad, widest at the middle, and with rounded ends] in long section and circular in cross section). Seeds are dark brown to nearly black.
